Man charged with murder over shooting death on Isle of Skye

A man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of John MacKinnon, who was killed during violent attacks on and around the Isle of Skye this week.

The victim’s devastated family paid tribute to him, describing him as a “much-loved member of the community”. MacKinnon, 47, was shot dead at his home in Sasaig in the southeast of the island at about 9.30am on Wednesday.

“John was a loving husband, father of six, brother, uncle and grandfather to his family, and was a much-loved member of the community,” his family said in a statement. “John loved the outdoors, was a keen motorcyclist and, as a loved father, shared his activities with his family.”

Half an hour after his death, a woman was seriously injured in a stabbing in nearby Tarskavaig. She was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow.

Two other people were later injured in a second shooting in Dornie, Lochalsh, 30 miles northeast, on mainland Scotland.
