The picture, a complex interlacing lattice of red, yellow, black and blue adhesive tapes with the title New York City I, 1941 , was first put on display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1945 . It has hung in the Kunstsammlung NordrheinWestfalen in Düsseldorf, western Germany, since 1980.The way the picture is hung shows the coloured lines thickening at the bottom, suggesting an extremely simplified version of a skyline. However, when the curator Susanne Meyer-Büser started researching the museum’s new show on the Dutch avant garde artist this year, she realised the picture should be the other way around.
