Pelosi’s office said that the 82-yearold was “violently assaulted” by an attacker who had broken into the family home.

“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation,” the office of the longtime Democratic congresswoman and House speaker said.

Paul Pelosi was attacked by his assailant with a hammer, according to the Associated Press, which cited people with knowledge of the investigation.

The attack was not random, AP reported, and the attacker specifically targeted the Pelosi family home.

Video footage of the property showed glass shattered in a side entrance to the house, indicating where the break-in may have occurred. Police indicated that the breach happened at a bout 2.27am Pacific time (0927 GMT) yesterday.
