Bulley was classed as a highrisk missing person when she disappeared from near her home in Lancashire three weeks ago.
Police revealed on Wednesday that Bulley was put into the highest risk category due to a "some significant issues with alcohol" stemming from "ongoing struggles with the menopause". They said this was done in an attempt to reduce speculation about the 45-year-old's disappearance.
MPs and campaigners said the release of personal information about a missing person was "deeply troubling". A Home Office spokesperson said the home secretary and policing minister were receiving regular updates on the handling of the case, "including why personal details about Nicola were briefed out at this stage of the investigation".
Bulley's family said she would not have wanted the information released but they hoped it would end the speculation and help the public focus instead on finding her.
