2nd edition delights authors

AN award-winning science book written by a Plymouth couple has been such a success that a second, updated, edition has been published.

Dr Samantha Lavender and her husband Andrew were "shocked" when the textbook Practical Handbook of Remote Sensing sold about a thousand copies after its 2016 release, despite such volumes traditionally retailing at a high price.

In 2016 it won an award as the outstanding academic title by Choice, the publishing arm the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Libraries Association. It was also translated into other languages.

Publisher CRC Press, a US specialist in technical and science books, was delighted with the sales figures and now a new edition of the book, with added material, is on the market.

"The publisher contacted us midCovid to see if we'd like to do a second edition," said Andrew. "We had sold 950 copies in all formats, which included paperback and hardback versions. That's pretty good for a textbook, so we have written a new version bringing it up to date."

Sam added: "We were shocked when we saw the numbers. We didn't expect to sell so many copies."
