ELECTRIC BICYCLES FOR RENT IN CITY

Beryl Bikes are here - but make sure to return them

A FLEET of 500 electric bikes are being made available for people to hire in Plymouth - but if you do not put them back it could cost you more than £80.

The Beryl Bikes are now available from 28 docking stations around the city. They are part of Plymouth City Council's new Connect Plymouth initiative to offer more sustainable ways to get around.

The e-bikes were launched with a fanfare in the city centre, with locals given the chance to try one out.

The event at the Piazza attracted plenty of people wanting to find out more about how the scheme works, and learn about e-bikes, car clubs and e-chargers. Initially, there will be 28 docking stations or Beryl Bays with 125 bikes ready to ride and more due throughout the year.

When fully operational, Beryl Bikes will have a 500-strong fleet of electric bikes for hire from more than 90 sites. The payment model is described as "pay as you ride, or buy up front and save", which means cyclists can pay for a single ride or multiple journeys.

Beryl Bike users have to download an app to hire the bikes. They pay a £1 fee to unlock the cycle, and then are charged 15p per minute. A 10-minute cycle would cost £2.50.
