A NEW Bishop of Plymouth has been appointed by Pope Francis. Bishop Philip Moger has been a priest of the Diocese of Leeds for over 40 years.
Until now he served as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Southwark. The date for his Installation as Diocesan Bishop is Saturday, November 9, at the Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Boniface, Plymouth.
It comes after Canon Christopher Whitehead announced earlier this year was stepping back from his intended role as the city’s next Bishop, following the announcement the preceding December that he was appointed to the post by the Pope. An ‘investigation’ into allegations made against the parish priest took place, and in April it was announced it had concluded with ‘no canonical action’ to be taken.
Bishop Moger said: “I’m very honoured to be asked by Pope Francis to be the 10th Bishop of this great Diocese of Plymouth. “I know that the diocese has been without a bishop for the last two years, so I am very grateful to Canon Paul Cummins, who has administered the diocese during the vacancy so ably and generously, and all who have supported him.
