A BID has been made to buy Plymouth's disused airport at a "fair price" FlyPlymouth, the company set up to reopen the airport, said it has offered to acquire and operate the airport on commercial terms.
The company is also calling on all political parties in the upcoming city council elections to make reopening Plymouth's airport a "firm, unequivocal" manifesto commitment. It said the airport's reopening has enjoyed crossparty support for years but progress on delivery remains slow.
Before he resigned in the wake of the Armada Way tree row, Tory council leader Richard Bingley said he would write to the city's business leaders to seek backing for a plan to reclaim the airport land and restart flights. He also planned to commission an independent report into what sort of flights could be restarted.
In 2020, Labour leader Tudor Evans, when he was in charge of the authority, began a move to see what level of investment would be needed to reopen the airport for commercial passenger services. The council also appointed a specialist aviation consultant to approach potential operators to assess the market appetite for a private sector company to restart flights.
