SPECTACULAR marine wildlife around the Westcountry coast took centre stage in the final episode of Sir David Attenborough’s acclaimed series Wild Isles. The BBC1 documentary series, which celebrates wildlife in the British Isles and highlights threats faced by our biodiversity, has included footage of a number of species in and around the South West.
Sunday’s fifth and final episode revealed spiny seahorses living amid seagrass in shallow waters around the Isles of Scilly; breeding cuttlefish and congregations of spider crabs off the Dorset coast, and basking sharks and fast-moving Atlantic bluefin tuna, which were filmed off Cornwall.
Previous episodes have shown a one million-strong winter roost of starlings in Cornwall; giant ash black slugs in a Dartmoor woodland, and mason bees in Dorset, among other Westcountry fauna.
The BBC programme sees the 96-year-old naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough shine a light on the challenges affecting the British Isles and nature that exists on our doorsteps.
