Cornwood are chastened by Plympton

PLYMPTON turned the Tolchards Devon Cricket League Premier Division form book upside down with a three-wicket win over Cornwood in a last-over finish at Oak Park on Saturday.

Cornwood went into the game one off the top of the Premier table and Plympton were one off the bottom.

Despite having to get through without run-getting batsman Elliot Hamilton, who suffered an injury in Friday night's 13-run win over Thorverton in the Wombat Cricket Devon Cup, Plympton inched to their third league win of the season.

Plympton are now out of the bottom two for the first time since the opening weeks of the season - and Cornwood have dropped back from second to fourth.

Cornwood made it to 207 for eight in 45 overs - five were knocked off for a delayed start due to mid-morning rain - without anyone making a half-century or more.

Max Finzel (27), Ben Beaumont (22), Ryan Rickard (20) and the uber patient Chris Parker (38 off 72 balls) got runs in the top half of the order, with Noah Carlisle (35) adding some oomph lower down. Danger man Jauy Bista was in and out for 11.

Surya Suresh (2-33) was the only Plympton bowler to take more than one wicket. Tino Mutombodzi (9-417-1) gave little or nothing away.

Plympton opener Ben Privett saw off the new-ball threat from Cornwood skipper Elliott Staddon and Josh Coker. By the time he got out to Lee Baker (3-38), Plympton were on 145 for 4.

Baker and Bista slowed Plympton's pursuit, which was dealt a blow when Justin Wubbeling was fifth out on 156 for 56. Skipper Alex Carr came and went for three runs added.

Jacob Caunter (11) and vice-captain Jonty Walliker (26no) took Plympton in sight of victory with a stand of 33. Matt Knight was in at the end when Walliker dispatched Beaumont for four to win it with three balls to spare.
