Council reveals plans to reuse soil from pond

PLYMOUTH City Council will use excavated material from an ongoing ponds scheme to create a 'natural amphitheatre' in a corner of Central Park, it has been revealed.

The authority was responding to calls to make use of heaped material currently in Barn Park Field, directly above the new pond.

The council has revealed that, while material is staying inside the park, it will be used to make a new amphitheatre at Reservoir Field, in park's northeast corner. Wildflower seeds are also to be sown on Reservoir Field.

Andrew Young, former chairman of Friends of Central Park, had written to The Herald urging the council not to move material to Reservoir Field, which is at the edge of the park and is bordered by Peverell Park Road.

Instead, Mr Young suggested that a natural landform could be created on Barn Park Field, and that a bridge over the ponds would help to link the northern and southern sections of the park.

Both Barn Park Field and Reservoir Field are currently closed off to the public and surrounded by metal fencing, although work remains ongoing on the ponds scheme.

Currently, the path from Pounds Park splits into two when it reaches Barn Park Field, creating a circular route to southern areas.

In a piece written for The Herald, Mr Young said existing pathways were failing to create coherent routes through the park.
