In the last year, Plymouth Hoe East, Plymouth Hoe West and Firestone Bay had a total of 132 sewage pollution alerts, according to The Safer Seas & Rivers Service (SSRS). It received 56 official reports of illness via its app, relating to gastroenteritis, ear, nose and throat infections, skin infections and respiratory or urinary tract infections.

Jeannie Chesworth has been wild swimming in Plymouth for many years, and in December 2023 she became unwell after swimming. The 56-year-old reported her illness on the app at the time, however, she was told by her GP it was difficult to prove the cause.
