MORE than 26,000 people signed up to the Beryl Bikes scheme in Plymouth last year - and together cycled the equivalent of almost five times around the Earth.
Data provided by the company behind the electric bike hire scheme comes after one resident sent pictures of an abandoned bike to The Herald and said: 'Is this what Beryl Bikes is all about?'
The e-bikes which are also found in similar schemes across the country were introduced to Plymouth in March last year, as part of a sustainable transport initiative developed by Plymouth City Council. The fleet of 500 bikes was introduced together with 28 docking stations across the city, and have since been used for more than 75,000 journeys, covering almost 200,000 kilometres.
