A CORONER has said that future deaths might be prevented, following an inquest into how a Plymouth man died after being restrained by police following a drugs binge.
Jota Smith died, aged 28, in April 2020, after suffering a heart attack brought on by cocaine use and a protracted struggle against his restraints.
At the close of a three-day inquest in which the jury heard evidence from doctors, police and others - jurors did not provide a verdict but did record a "narrative" account, a time-line of the events leading up to Mr Smith's death.
Senior coroner Ian Arrow said this could prove valuable in preventing future deaths in similar circumstances. He told the jury of five men and four women at the Plymouth inquest: "I believe what you have been able to record may be used in future and may assist in reducing future deaths of this nature."
