PRISON officers in the South West are to be issued with body-worn video cameras after a study found they improved trust between staff and prisoners.
The roll-out will see around 13,000 new and improved cameras (BWVs) issued to all public sector prisons, including HMP Dartmoor, Exeter and Channings Wood, with the aim of keeping them safe and cutting prison violence.
Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk KC recently made the announcement while meeting staff at HMP Isis in London to mark his first week in post. The move will double the total number of BWVs available to be used every time an officer is on duty, and will capture challenging prisoner behaviour, how staff dealt with it and help stop false accusations from prisoners.
