Plymouth scientists are heading to COP28

MARINE LABORATORY EXPERTS SET FOR DUBAI

SCIENTISTS from Plymouth Marine Laboratory will be among those providing the latest evidence of some of the effects of climate change which will form the basis of policymaking at COP28 – the United Nations Climate Change Conference – which starts this week.

Controversially being held this year in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates who have garnered wealth and power through oil, COP28 will see the world’s nations come together for talks which environmentalists hope will deliver ambitious targets to cut down on CO2 emissions as well as protecting vast swathes of fragile ecosystems.

Five delegates from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) will attend the summit across the two weeks of talks, with the first heading out this Thursday.

PML experts have attended each COP since 2009 and over the years their work and that of the wider ocean community has seen parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognise the importance of protecting the ocean and its ecosystems in the Convention and the Paris Agreement.
