The new restaurant, which opens its doors at 8am this morning in the Mills Bakery, is themed on its namesake in Florida, which started life as a newsstand and went on to become one of the world's most celebrated diners.
It's starting life with a host of giveaways, including 3,500 pizzas, cocktails and coffees via a "wheel of fortune" game, with details being given out on fliers. There will also be a 10% discount for people arriving by sustainable transport, including on foot, by bike or via a ferry. Co-owner Mike Turner, who brings 40 years' retail and marketing experience to this new venture, said: "We have gone nuts on promotion." Plymouth's News Café will be open seven days a week from breakfast to dinner, serving up an extensive range of delicious food and drink in the 4,000sq ft unit vacated when Prezzo moved out in April last year.
The News Café will offer everything from coffee to cocktails, early-morning breakfasts to late-night nibbles from a menu designed to look just like a newspaper.
