Residents view hidden treasures of Sherford

SHERFORD residents had the chance to learn about a wealth of hidden treasures which were saved by archaeologists during construction on the town.

An event held at Sherford Vale Primary School last Wednesday, called Making the Most of Our Heritage, saw residents gather to learn about some of the incredible finds which have been uncovered since 2015.

In addition to evidence of settlement as early as the late Stone Age, barrows, roundhouses, Neolithic pottery and Bronze Age tools have also been found, casting light on the lives of early Devon communities.

With archaeologists having undertaken investigations since construction first began, the site has also yielded the bones of Ice Age megafauna, including the well-preserved remains of woolly rhinoceros and a woolly mammoth a find which sparked international headlines.

A Roman road has also been discovered, providing evidence that this area has long been a crucial link for trade and connecting ancient communities.

Last week's event, which went into further detail about the archaeological finds, was organised by the Sherford Community Land Trust, a community organisation which has been formed as part of the establishment of the town.
