A CHARITY bike rider turned art student has created a memorial dedicated to the brave men of the 29th Infantry Division who embarked from Plymouth’s coast for the D-Day landings.
Stuart Morrissey, otherwise known as Plymouth’s ‘Mad Rider’, has created the sculpture and bench entitled ‘The Blue and Grey’, which has been installed at Mount Edgcumbe.
The 62-year-old, who lives in Plymouth, first joined Arts University Plymouth for an Extended BA (Hons) Craft and Material Practices degree in 2020. After serving in the Royal Air Force, Stuart has had a lifelong interest in and respect for the armed forces.
Stuart was inspired to create the new memorial bench and sculpture after reading about the history of the 29th Infantry Division, which was based on Mount Edgcumbe during World War Two before setting off to join the first wave of troops on D-Day on June 6, 1944, in Normandy, France.
