'Selfish' parking proving a real inconvenience

RESIDENTS in St Judes have said that parking along Beaumont Road is becoming a problem, with many households having more than one car, and a taxi firm also parking multiple vehicles.

Some residents said that West Devon Taxis Ltd have ‘six or seven’ cars parked on the road, while other households also have multiple vehicles.

But Les Beaver, who has run West Devon Taxis for 11 years, said he is as entitled to park on the road as any other resident, and suggested that commuters and those living in HMO properties – houses of multiple occupation – are more of a problem.

However, Plymouth City Council has said any decision around permit parking must also consider the effect on schools, shops and leisure facilities.

Resident Gerry Anderson said he can rarely find a parking space near his home, and instead ends up parking in an alley behind.

He said parking was increasingly becoming problematic.

“It’s been a few years now – it seems to be growing,” he said. “It’s just that it comes to a point where you come home and they never move – one of the houses has five vehicles on their own.
