A FORMER serviceman from Plymouth has been reunited with treasured medals awarded during his time serving in the armed forces – five years after they were stolen in a burglary at his home.
Peter “Mitch” Mitchell’s items were scattered across the country, with some stuffed inside a pillowcase found at a railway depot.
The veteran’s home was raided in September 2019, with items including jewellery, gold sovereign coins and the medals taken. Following an appeal by Devon and Cornwall Police, a piece of jewellery was traced to a Plymouth shop, and a watch was located in Manchester during lockdown.
And last week, Plymouth community interest company Clean Our Patch found war medals, old coins and jewellery hidden in a pillowcase in a carrier bag near the former railway depot at Laira in Plymouth. The group posted a picture of its find on Facebook – and one of its followers recognised the items from the police photo appeal issued years before.
