Test cricket will remain a priority for everyone: Shah

The ICC chairperson-elect outlines his mission for the new role he will assume in December

HAVING been elected unopposed as the Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council, BCCI secretary Jay Shah will not assume office till December 1, 2024. However, the challenges that lie ahead for the chairperson-elect are already clear.

In fact, Shah, who will be holding the office for three years with an option of continuing for three more years, himself has outlined his goals for the top job in the global cricketing body. And it starts with prioritising Test cricket and creating a dedicated fund for the longest format at a time when players are looking to become freelance T20 stars, especially from countries that do not have significant financial resources.

Shah said that the goal would be to ensure players are committed to the longest format.

"While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game. We must see to it that cricketers are driven to longer format and our efforts will be channelised towards this goal," he said soon after the confirmation.
