FORMER prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday, had a strong connection with Mysuru, both as a leader and an admirer of the city's historical and academic legacy.
In 1992, as Union Finance Minister, Dr Singh visited Mysuru to deliver the convocation address at the University of Mysore (UoM). During the event, he was bestowed an honorary doctorate by then UoM VC Prof M Madaiah, an economist and close associate of Singh. This gesture highlighted his appreciation for the university's contribution to education and research.
Dr Singh's admiration for the century-old UoM persisted during his tenure as the prime minister. In 2011, on the university's 95th foundation day, he sanctioned a grant of ₹100 crore through the then Governor H R Bharadwaj, praising the institution as one of the finest globally.
