The two Bills, which proposes the mechanism to hold simultaneous elections, were introduced in the Lok Sabha after a heated debate.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticised the government saying that voting at the introduction stage of the two Bills in the Lok Sabha revealed that the BJP did not have the two-thirds majority required to pass a constitutional amendment.
After the division vote, the BJP got 269 votes in favour of the Bill and 198 MPs opposing it.
