S Syed Gulam was returning home from work at 8.30 pm on Wednesday when the concrete slab from a TNUHDB tenement's sunshade, collapsed on him, leading to his death at Srinivasapuram.
Just metres away, the 22-year-old's parents and relatives were busy making arrangements for his marriage that was slated for early next year. "We were getting his wedding invitations printed when the news reached us. Nobody should have such a fate," said Syed's aunt Shamu M.
Foreshore Estate police said the youth sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Royapettah Government Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. He was employed as an electrician at a private company in Parry's Corner. The police suspect that the sunshade that collapsed may have weakened due to the heavy rains recently. Syed's body was handed over to his family on Thursday morning after postmortem. A police inquiry into the incident is on.
