DYFI march turns violent; several held, released

Both the protesters and police traded charges of provoking violence against each other. Police arrested around 23 leaders and activists of the youth wing of the CPI-M, including the state secretary Minakshi Mukherjee, president Dhrubajyoti Saha, and assistant secretary Kalatan Dasgupta. They were, however, later released on personal bond.

Stones were pelted at the police, forcing the police to lob several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the marchers. Ms Mukherjee alleged that the peaceful march was attacked by the police and Trinamul Congress-backed miscreants.

Police officers said at least 4,500 protestors were in the rally.

The agitators dismantled the first barricades put up by the police with rail guards at 2.30 pm, some hundred meters away from Tinbatti More. They marched towards the More and engaged in argument with the police and that led to the scuffle.

Senior officers, including deputy commissioner of traffic, Abhishek Gupta, and additional deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Purnima Sherpa led a huge contingent of police force.
