National Science Day is celebrated across the country on 28th February every year commemorating the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir CV Raman on 28 February 1928.For his discovery, Sir CV Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. Till today he adores the seat as the lone Nobel laureate from the country, who was born, brought up, studied and worked in India. It was in 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day. The focal theme of this year’s National Science Day is “Global Science for Global Wellbeing”.
Sir CV Raman is the Acharya of Indian Science who showed us how our science should be done decades back. His life showed how good science can be done within India using indigenous technologies, if one has a strong passion and perseverance. The rise of Indian science in providing well-being to the whole of humanity during the Covid-19 pandemic was appreciated by the global community.
In a world dominated by 8 billion plus Homo sapiens, finding resources to sustain life and solutions to afflictions affecting humanity is arduous. Mother nature alone cannot help in the sustenance of the species. Our existence on this planet is managed only by virtue of 'Science', otherwise, by now, we would have become extinct like many of our predecessor species that left this planet forever.
