The court of Additional Sessions Judge RP Mogera rejected Mr Gandhi's plea for stay of his conviction in the defamation case filed against him for wondering aloud, "why do all thieves have the Modi surname?" during an election rally in Karnataka.
The court observed he should have been "more careful with his words" since he was a Member of Parliament adding that a "high standard of morality" is expected from a person like the appellant.
The court also observed that the trial court had imposed a sentence which was permissible in law.
