Hyderabad: Ghattamaneni Krishna, Tollywood’s own ‘James Bond’ whose trailblazer spy thrillers in inimitable cowboy style left audiences in raptures, passed away early Tuesday. He was 79. Krishna who ruled the silver screen for five decades was the last of the Telugu legends in the league of NT Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who catapulted the southern film industry to glitzy heights with technological innovations and neo-noir genre films.
Krishna’s 1983 blockbuster Telugu film, Ooruki Monagadu, spawned a Bollywood remake, Himmatwala, which turned out to be the biggest Hindi grosser in the Eighties. He acted in ‘Gudachari 116’ a spy thriller and ‘Mosagallaku Mosagadu’ introducing the ‘cowboy’ in Telugu films and established himself as a superstar.
