Pune: A group of international scientists, including two experts from Pune, have challenged a research paper presented by the University of Arizona that states transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 first occurred in the Huanan seafood market in South China in November 2019.

Scientists Monali Rahalkar, from Agharkar Research Institute, and Rahul Bahulikar, from BAIF Development Research Foundation, stated in a letter, along with 12 other experts, that detection of human-positive cases at the market may have occurred several weeks before the first cases were detected, and an introduction of the virus to the seafood market may have been by an externally infected person.
