COP27 began in Egypt with the inclusion of climate compensation in the formal agenda. The compensation rests on the principle that today’s developed countries – the biggest sation in the formal agenda.

The compensation rests on theprinciple that today’s developed countries – the biggest cumulative polluters – compensate poorer countries hurt by extreme weather events, for example, the recent floods in Pakistan. Many in the rich world also agree this is a fair demand. CO2, the single biggest contributor to global warming, lingers in the atmosphere for about 300-1,000 years after being emitted by human activities. Thus far, the US and Europe together have contributed 58% of cumulative CO2 emissions.
