The Saraswati Baug Colony Ganeshotsav in Jogeshwari East has stepped into its 100th year. "Our mandal was founded in 1923. It's the first sarvajanik Ganeshotsav of the western suburbs," said spokesman Siddhesh Vikhare. "Born of a need for social and cultural awareness, this mandal was established. It nurtured the talent of stalwart writer Pu La Deshpande who spent his childhood years here. The first theatrical play he saw was in front of this Saraswati Baug Ganeshotssav, and he has often given credit to years spent in Saraswati Baug." The colony idol remains a classic 2-3ft, and decorations are environment friendly. Restraint and dignity are the hallmark of the celebration.
