New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday released its first list of candidates for the MCD elections, giving tickets to 52 excouncillors, including nine former mayors. Of the 232 names declared by the party, 126 are women. In the 250-member MCD, 125 seats are reserved for women.
Senior party functionaries said the deliberations for candidates on the remaining 18 wards were still on and their names will be declared soon.
"Delhi BJP has selected excellent candidates to represent all sections of society.
The candidates are dedicated to public service," said Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta.
"While making the selection, we took note of their attitude towards public service as well as popularity in polls and surveys conducted by the party," he added.
Former mayor and Delhi BJP general secretary Harsh Malhotra said 23 Punjabi, 21 Vaishya, 42 Brahmin, 34 Jat, 26 Poorvanchali, 22 Rajput, 17 Gujjar, 13 Jatav, nine Balmiki, nine Yadav, one Sindhi and two from Uttarakhand have been given tickets. "The candidates also include seven Sikhs, three Muslims and one from the Jain community," Malhotra said.
