New Delhi: Two people were killed and 18 injured after a major fire broke out at a footwear factory in Narela Industrial Area on Tuesday around 9.20am. Most workers had arrived by then and begun the day’s work. They said the fire broke out after a drum containing polyurethane exploded when a machine was being used in the front portion of the factory. The owner of the factory has been arrested.
The impact was such that the window frame and the labourer, Sonu Thakur (30), working on the machine were flung out of the building. The building didn’t have a fire noobjection certificate and there was only one entry and exit gate. Luckily, the terrace gate was open and 40-50 employees jumped onto the adjacent building and escaped.
The deceased, identified as Thakur and Akhil (25), died due to severe burn injuries. Both had lost their fathers over a year ago. While Thakur was the sole breadwinner of his family, Akhil had started working to support his sister and mother. Thakur is survived by his married sister, a brother and mother.
