New Delhi: Opening of the underpass at Ashram may have eased the commuters' passage on Mathura Road but construction work on the project to extend the flyover at the intersection to the Delhi-Noida-Direct flyway has unleashed a nightmare.
The journey towards east Delhi and Noida from the south is a slow but steady one because of the construction work. However, the traffic coming towards ashram from east Delhi and Noida (through DND) is a different story. Lack of proper road signages, a worn-out and uneven road surface, traffic being split into two lanes-like two outstretched arms with the fingers interlocked-created to skirt the construction work and the absence of marshals is leading to chaos during all hours of the day and night.
The PWD project is a classic example of how not to execute an infrastructure project in a busy traffic corridor. Delhi Metro's shining example of causing minimum inconvenience to commuters while building the network has been completely lost on government agencies. Work on the Pragati Maidan transit corridor too was an example of such indifference to people.
