SC didn’t agree with will of people: Rijiju on NJAC

Reviving the debate on National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC), Union law minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday defended the NJAC Act as the "collective will of the nation" and iterated for the second time in less than 10 days that the collegium system of appointing judges is opaque.

The NJAC Act, passed by Parliament and ratified by over half of the states, was struck down by an SC bench as unconstitutional in 2015, and the collegium system of appointing judges to HCs and the SC was upheld. "I feel the SC hasn't agreed with the will of the people of India," Rijiju said. His remarks suggest an upping of the ante against the SC and comes against the backdrop of the collegium's failure to finalise its choices due to divisions within.
