Nominations opened Monday for the Nov. 4 byelection to fill the Don Valley West council seat.
Prospective candidates to fill former councillor Jaye Robinson’s seat in Don Valley West started tossing their hats in the ring on Monday as registrations opened for the fall byelection.
Among the five candidates who registered at city hall to run in the Nov. 4 byelection was Evan Sambasivam, 28, a mental health advocate who grew up in the ward and who ran unsuccessfully as a councillor in 2022 in Eglinton-Lawrence.
Sambasivam called Don Valley West “one of the heart beats of Toronto,” but said there are minimal community amenities, doctors, medical spaces and community spaces in the ward.
He said he’s wanted to join city council after losing a long-time friend to homelessness. “I will always vote for more housing where it needs to be,” he said on Monday, adding that he would be an “ardent defender” of the Ontario Science Centre, which is in the bordering ward.
