As the world turns in men’s professional golf, each week brings a new bit of news or gossip worthy of a soap opera script.
Except daytime dramas tend to attract audiences, not turn them away.
The most recent plot twist involves the PGA Tour policy board, from which Rory McIlroy resigned in November and recently wanted to rejoin. However, other board members — namely Tiger Woods and Patrick Cantlay — weren’t keen on him simply taking Webb Simpson’s seat and thwarted his return.
McIlroy and Cantlay are far from best pals, so the blockage only increased chatter of a power struggle among PGA Tour members and perhaps a rift between McIlroy and Woods. But McIlroy was diplomatic in response to his rejection, and veteran Adam Scott said the whole thing was much ado about nothing.
Then, along with Woods, Scott, PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan and some business folk, McIlroy was named to the tour’s new transaction committee. That team will work with the Saudis on a deal that has been slower to take hold than Cantlay’s glacial pace of play. Amid all of that, McIlroy went out and waxed the field at the Wells Fargo Championship on the eve of another major.
