Tom Pidcock got his 2023 road season off to a winning start with stage victory at the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal. Having tested his legs during the first three stages, the Leeds-born rider attacked for the second time, with 1.6km to race, up the final climb on the race’s fourth stage, forcing a group of three clear, including young British rider Oscar Onley (DSM).
The pressing of home hope João Almeida brought the front groups together in the final kilometre but Pidcock timed his sprint to perfection, putting enough time into the other GC riders to take the leader’s jersey.
