Australia humbled India to lift their sixth ICC ODI World Cup crown. Australia won the clash with six wickets to spare. India were folded for a paltry 240 in 50 overs after being asked to bat. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul hammered fifties, with Rohit Sharma scoring 47. For Australia, their pacers handled the job well, with Mitchell Starc claiming a three-wicket haul.
India needed to start well and reduce the Aussies to a score of 47/3 in seven overs. However, the bowling faded thereafter as Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne added a record fourth-wicket stand to break the Indian hearts. Head scored a majestic hundred, with Labuschagne chipping in with a fifty.
Australia made things look easy on a surface that eased up for batting. India once again failed to cross the line in a major ICC event, losing successive ICC World Test Championships. India's wait for an ICC trophy has continued since 2013. India had also reached the 2014 ICC t20 World Cup final. Before this, they reached the semis in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups.
Here is the list of records broken.
ROHIT SHARMA SCRIPTS THIS MASSIVE ODI WC RECORD
Indian captain Rohit scored a brisk 47 at the top. With his 29-run in the contest, Rohit went past New Zealand’s Kane Williamson to become the captain with the most runs in a single WC edition. Williamson scored 578 runs in the 2019 WC edition. Rohit finished the 2023 campaign with 597 runs at 54.27.
ROHIT AND GILL ADD THIS RECORD
Rohit and Sgubman Gill added 30 runs for the first wicket. In the 2023 WC, the duo tormented the opposition bowler. They now have 1523 partnership runs in 2023, the second-most in a calendar year in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly occupy the top spot (1635).
