After a 24-year absence, a big name in local football is primed to return to the top of the South African game next season.
Cape Town Spurs, one of South Africa's most successful clubs since their formation in January 1970, have given themselves every chance of claiming the automatic promotion place on offer to the winners of the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Spurs ceased to exist in 1999, when they merged with Seven Stars, forming Ajax Cape Town in a joint venture with the Dutch giants.
At the onset of the FIFA international break at the tail end of March, Shaun Bartlett's side were involved in an epic three-way battle with Polokwane City and newcomers Casric Stars for the title of second-tier champions.
At the very least, barring a spectacular collapse, Spurs should win a place in the end-of-season promotion playoffs.
