FORMER truck driver Ben Hinchliffe is hoping he can steer Stockport to a third league title in five years and create history in the process.
No player has ever won a champion’s medal for the same team at National League North, National League and League Two level, but that unprecedented hat-trick now looks in the sights of Stockport’s sole survivor from the side’s sixth-tier days.
The Hatters went into this weekend five points clear at the top with Hinchliffe, who already holds club records for most goalkeeping appearances and clean sheets, eyeing up another landmark accomplishment.
“I’ve got things I want to tick off and a third title would be right up there,” the 36-year-old shot-stopper admitted. “It would be the dream.
“One of my aims is also to become the first player to achieve three promotions at this club and, if the boys could help me do that, it would be a great achievement.”
The size of that achievement can be measured by the 17 years that have passed since Hinchliffe last played in League One, managing two outings on loan at Tranmere.
