The Terriers were relegated from the Championship last term, ending an unbroken 12-year stint in the top two tiers of English football.
But ambitious owner Kevin Nagle has no intention of staying there and signings like Lonwijk - a League One title-winner with Plymouth in 2022-23 provide a clear illustration that promotion is the minimum requirement for new gaffer Michael Duff.
"Everyone understands that the goal is to get promoted," said the 21-year-old centre-back, who joined on loan from Wolves on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield is a massive club that was in the Premier League not so long ago. I don't think it belongs in League One and it needs to get back up again. I know what it takes to do that and I'm here to help make it happen."
A product of the PSV Eindhoven youth system, Lonwijk signed for Wolves in 2020 and has since spent time on loan at Fortuna Sittard, Grasshopper Zurich and Wycombe, in addition to his successful stint at Home Park.
