It came despite ending the match with ten men after an 89th-minute red card for Shea Charles.
But Saints boss Russell Martin applauded Charles for a “good foul”.
With the Saints under pressure, the midfielder, on as a second-half substitute, halted a Rangers attack in the 89th minute by bringing down Albert Adomah.
It led to a second yellow card and Martin said: “Shea took one for the team, which is unfortunate for him but was a big moment because such a strength of theirs is on the counter-attack.
“I’ll criticise If you get sent off for something stupid – dissent or a wild tackle and all that stuff.
“If you’re on a yellow card and one of their biggest threats is the counter-attack, I think it’s a good foul. There are good fouls in the game and that was one.
