Garmin has established a strong presence in the fitness and running communities with its tracking devices. Now, with its smartwatches, it is attempting to replicate that success among Android users, given the vacant spot left by Apple watches wrt native Android compatibility.
The Forerunner 255, as expected, performs well in sports modes such as running, cycling, and triathlon.
We were also impressed by the accuracy of its sleep mode tracking, although it is unable to track afternoon naps. The strap and size of the device also makes it very easy and comfortable for all day use, unlike conventional sports trackers which one is tempted to remove after the sports activity is completed.
The smartwatch’s music capabilities are limited, as it is not an eSIM watch and streaming has become the preferred method for listening to music. It does well in displaying notifications and alerts from the phone, but it is not practical to have them on all the time due to the lack of a touch display. The device is also comfortable and easy to wear all day and has a battery life of over a week for power users.
