If you drive over the land bridge linking County Mayo's Currane Peninsula with Achill Island, following the curling coast road from Keel until it runs out in Keem Bay, you will come to one of the westernmost beaches in Europe.
The place feels scooped out of the mountains. On sunny summer days, its waters sparkle. But if you go there in the off-season - even better in inclement, misty or changeable weather - you may well have the beach to yourself.
