THE WRITING IS on the wall-new formats of hospitality are all the rage, and the Indian traveller is happy to ditch the conventional hotel for new accommodation styles. Families are looking at villas and homestays, offbeat Airbnbs, cargo containers, and tents. "In India, from 2019 to 2021, bookings on unique Airbnb listings have jumped by 30 per cent," says Amanpreet Bajaj, general manager, Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. A destination where the non-hotel format thrives-Goa-now sees a bevy of villa and homestay aggregators with established names like Isprava along with new, affordable luxury brands like Staymaster, all of which are popular among family travellers.
Chennai-based luxury travel agent Neeraj Gupta comments, "The Indian traveller wants an Instagrammable spot and is constantly looking for niche, offbeat experiences. My customers are increasingly shying away from large hotels to opt for quirky stays in homes, villas, or even a glamp."
