Eat Like You're Holidaying In The Med
"Research suggests that those adopting a Mediterranean diet are happier than those on a typical western diet," reveals Kiri Pointon-Bell, registered dietitian and BDA spokesperson. "In fact, scientists have recently found that the part of the brain that regulates emotions is larger in those who have consumed a long-term Mediterranean diet.
"Focus on moving away from refined or processed foods. Instead, try to incorporate more fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish, poultry, olive oil and some dairy in your diet for the Mediterranean approach to happiness."
Sweet Talking
Packed with vitamin B6, which helps to trigger the release of serotonin, the natural happiness chemical, sweet potatoes are also a rich source of fibre so they'll make your gut feel good! And a happy, effective digestive system always helps the day go better!
Protein Power
There's much more to protein than building, repairing and maintaining healthy muscles and bones. Protein also contributes to emotional health. "Our bodies break proteins down into nutrients called amino acids," explains Kiri Pointon-Bell. "Tryptophan is one such amino acid and has an important role in producing serotonin, the chemical that carries messages to the brain to help us feel happy.
"A regular intake of protein can, therefore, contribute to happier thoughts and feelings. Consume protein at every meal lean meat, fish, beans, lentils, eggs, milk, tofu, cheese and soya products are all good sources."
