Bridget McGrouther reconnects with nature on a super break in this unspoilt area of Scotland

There is something about soaking in a steamy hot tub that instantly eases all cares, particularly if you're surrounded by breathtaking Borders scenery or a sparkling, star-strewn sky.

This was the bubbly welcome that awaited us at our luxury Airhouses lodge on an organic farm in a get-away-from-it-all location near Lauder.

What was best of all for a Friday evening was toasting our weekend stay with a glass or two of bubbles in the bubbles, as our hectic week at work soon ebbed away.

My husband and I had arrived just in time for sunset, to be treated to the panoramic view through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the unspoilt scenery of the Lammermuir Hills beyond.

By the time we were being massaged by the hot water jets, the full moon, Plough and Orion's Belt were overhead, unspoilt by any light pollution. I have to say the sunrise, too, is an idyllic time for a dip when you can watch roe deer grazing around the lodges.

Being a dog-friendly property meant our terrier cross Seth could enjoy walks from the doorstep, as well as interesting scents left by local wildlife such as foxes and even badgers. Feeders attracted plenty of wild birds, while owls hooted at night.
