For senior members of the royal family, summer holidays mean Scotland. And the King got into the swing of things by donning his kilt to watch the Mey Highland Games.
Resplendent in Prince Charles Edward Stewart tartan with a tweed jacket and matching waistcoat, plus bright red socks and a sporran, His Majesty knocked back a wee dram of whisky and looked to be having a wonderful time as he watched bagpipe and highland fling competitions, and a tug of war at the event in John O'Groats.
The King, 74, has an extensive wardrobe of kilts in various tartans to choose from when he's in Scotland, staying at either Castle Mey or Birkhall on the Balmoral estate, and is happy to show off his knees whenever he crosses the border. However, his son and heir Prince William doesn't have the same fondness for the distinctive design and refuses to wear them. It's been revealed that William hasn't worn a kilt since he was a child - even when he graduated from Scottish university St Andrew's.
